It's been a while since I've posted a picture of my shopping trips.  Yesterday, I had the opportunity to do some shopping alone.  So much more fun! 

We are pretty stocked on the basics thanks to Azure, but were in need of some snacky food.  I love Trader Joes for that kind of stuff!  Please forgive the quality of the picture.  My camera broke and my phone doesn't take very good pictures.

Trader Joes: Basil Plants $1.99!

I stopped in at Trader Joes to get some wine to make Sangria (mmmm, Sangria....), and noticed that their Basil plants are priced down to $1.99 each! I've been watching the price on the plants drop over the past couple months so I snatched one up.

Last year I bought basil, shrink wrapped it and stuck it in the freezer. It was great in curries and pasta sauces. This year, I also plan on making my own pesto and freezing it.

As if we needed another reason to love Trader Joe's...

I don't know anyone who doesn't love shopping at Trader Joe's. Great prices on healthy, natural and organic foods, a large selection of ethnic sauces and prepared foods, plus the employees are all super friendly and helpful.

One of the main reasons I've been wanting to take our family more organic is the prevalence of genetically modified foods. The more I learn about them, the more they sorta freak me out. Anyways, I decided to ask the Trader Joe's employees whether their products contained GMO's. Guess what? They don't! I was told by more than one employee that any product carrying the Trader Joe's label is GMO free!

So now I can rest easy knowing that if I'm not able to afford certain organic products (like mayo!), buying their brand does guarantee they are free of GMO's. Also, for those of you who don't already know this, they do take manufacturers coupons.

A few finds on Organic foods

I did some shopping today, and found some good deals on Organic foods that I thought I'd share.

Franz Bread Outlet (~100th & SE Foster) - I found 100% Whole Wheat Organic bread for 4/$5! So I stocked up with 10 loaves. The thing about the store is that their stock changes a lot so you can't count on the same product for the same prices, but more often than not, I'm able to score awesome deals!

Fred Meyer - See the Organic Valley creamer? I got them both for $2.29! They are regularly priced at $2.19 each. I used a $2/2 Organic Valley coupon found in the Naturally Preferred Magazine (in the organic section at Fred Meyer), and basically got one free!

Trader Joes - Organic bananas are $.29 each. I'm not sure how much it would work out pound-wise, but I got the bunch of 4 for $1.16. The Organic Sugar Plum tomatoes are $2.99 for 1 lb. Tomatoes are pretty expensive in general right now, so $3/lb. for organic is a great deal!

Since I have been tight on grocery money this month, I made up my menu for the week on Saturday then did my "needs" shopping at Winco, Trader Joes and the Portland Fruit Co. I really hate shopping at Winco, but it was the cheapest way to go for the random items I needed. I decided that what I have left will be the money I use to stock up on the sale items at Safeway and Albertsons. I'll be posting my menu for the week soon!
